Swimming Pool Tiling and Resurfacing in Dubai

Glass and ceramic mosaic, pebble and plaster finishes, epoxy grout and correct substrate preparation — from waterline bands to full refinishing.

Overview

A Harder Job Than Any Tiling Inside a House.

A pool finish has to survive constant immersion, treated water, and a surface that heats and cools every day of the year.

That is why pool tiling fails in ways bathroom tiling does not. Grout washes out, tiles debond, plaster etches, and the waterline picks up a stain that will not come off.

RSK handles pool tiling and resurfacing across Dubai, from waterline bands and repairs to full refinishing.

Pool Tiling at a Glance
Full retiling: complete internal finish in mosaic or porcelain
Waterline tiling: the band at water level, replaced or upgraded
Pebble finishes: aggregate finishes applied to the shell
Plaster and render finishes: traditional marble plaster and modern equivalents
Substrate preparation: cleaning, repair and levelling before any finish
Bond coat application: the layer that decides whether tiles stay on
Epoxy grouting: the grout specification that suits pool conditions
Coping and edge detail: the joint between pool and deck
Step and bench markings: contrasting tile for visibility and safety
Tile repair: replacing failed sections without a full refinish

What It Involves

What Pool Tiling Involves

The finish is the last stage, and it only lasts if everything under it was done properly.

The order is fixed: shell repaired, waterproofing applied and tested, substrate levelled, bond coat applied, tile or finish laid, grouted, cured, then filled and balanced.

Skipping any part of that shows up within a season or two. A tile laid onto a dusty or uneven substrate debonds. A finish applied over failed waterproofing lifts. Cement grout in a pool washes out and takes the tile with it eventually. Preparation is genuinely the majority of the work, and it is also invisible in the finished pool, which is why it is where cheap quotes save money.

Project Types

Types of Pool Finish

Glass mosaic
The most decorative option. Holds colour well under UV, gives depth and reflection in the water, and comes in blends rather than flat colours. The most expensive to buy and to lay, since it is fixed on mesh sheets and needs a very flat substrate.
Ceramic and porcelain mosaic
More economical than glass, hard wearing, and available in similar formats. Slightly less reflective in the water. A common choice where a tiled pool is wanted without the glass budget.
Pebble and aggregate finishes
Applied as a render with exposed aggregate rather than laid as tile. Hard wearing, hides marks and small movement well, and gives a natural appearance. Texture underfoot is a matter of taste, and it is worth seeing a sample before committing.
Plaster and marble render
The most economical finish and the shortest lived here. Vulnerable to etching where the water chemistry is not kept balanced, and it stains more readily than tile. Reasonable where budget is the priority and the water is well maintained.
Specification

Grout, Bond Coat, the Waterline and the Coping Joint

Grout, bond coat and why pool tiling fails
Grout is the single most important specification decision in a pool, and it is the one most often left generic. Standard cementitious grout is porous — in a pool it sits permanently in treated water, absorbs it, and gradually erodes. Once the joints open, water reaches the bond coat and tiles start to come away in patches.

Epoxy grout is non-porous, resists pool chemistry, and holds colour. It costs more, takes longer to apply and needs a skilled hand, which is exactly why it appears in some quotes and not others. The bond coat matters just as much: it has to be a system designed for permanent immersion, applied to a properly prepared substrate.

Three other things shorten a finish here: unbalanced water chemistry, thermal cycling, and movement in the shell — which needs addressing before refinishing, not after.
The waterline and the coping joint
The waterline is where the pool ages fastest, and the coping joint is where it leaks.

The band at water level takes the worst of everything: UV from above, water below, and the oils, sunscreen and dust that collect on the surface. It stains and scales more than the rest of the pool, which is why a contrasting waterline tile is a practical decision as much as a decorative one — and the section most often replaced on its own.

Above it, the coping joins pool to deck. That joint has to accommodate movement between two structures that expand and settle differently. Where it is grouted rigidly or detailed poorly, it cracks, and water gets behind the tile from the top. Both are worth addressing together whenever a pool is refinished, since access is only easy while the pool is empty.
Approvals

Do You Need Approval for Pool Tiling in Dubai?

For refinishing an existing pool, usually not.

Retiling, resurfacing and waterline replacement do not change the pool's size, depth or position, so a building permit does not normally apply.

Villa communities commonly require a developer or community NOC before contractors start work, and access, working hours and waste removal are controlled the same way as for any trade. Where preparation uncovers structural repair or waterproofing failure, the scope changes and should be requoted rather than absorbed.

Cost

How Much Does Pool Tiling Cost in Dubai?

Tile choice and substrate condition drive the price. Grout specification is a smaller line that decides how long it lasts:

Surface area
Floor, walls, steps and benches, measured properly
Tile type
Glass mosaic, ceramic mosaic, porcelain, pebble and plaster are far apart
Tile format
Small mosaic takes far longer to lay than large format
Substrate condition
Level and sound against repair and re-rendering
Waterproofing
Whether it is being replaced or retained and tested
Bond coat system
Immersion-rated adhesive rather than a general-purpose product
Grout specification
Epoxy against cementitious, and the labour difference between them
Steps and benches
More edges, more cuts, more labour per square metre
Waterline band
Often a different tile, laid as a separate detail
Coping and edge detail
Priced by the metre of pool perimeter
Draining and refilling
Emptying, disposal, refilling and rebalancing
The number that matters
Not a per-square-foot estimate from a website — a written BOQ after a site visit, showing quantities, materials, exclusions and payment milestones.
Usually excluded from cheap quotes
Approvals and drawings, protection of retained finishes, MEP upgrades, waste removal, snagging after handover, and anything described as "subject to site condition".
Timeline

How Long Does Pool Tiling Take?

Preparation and curing take longer than laying the tile.

Substrate repair cures, waterproofing cures and is tested, tile is laid, grout cures, and the pool is filled and balanced before use. Small format mosaic takes considerably longer to lay than large format tile, so the finish chosen affects the programme as well as the cost.

The pool is out of use throughout, and should not be left drained longer than necessary, particularly through summer.

Avoid These

Mistakes That Cost Money

Using cementitious grout in a pool. It is porous, it erodes in treated water, and the tiles follow it.
Tiling over unprepared substrate. Dust, unevenness and old adhesive all prevent a proper bond.
Retaining waterproofing without testing it. A fill test before tiling is the only way to know it still holds.
Choosing tile before checking the substrate. Small mosaic needs a very flat base. An uneven shell may need re-rendering first.
Ignoring the coping joint. Water getting behind tile from the top does the same damage as a leak from below.
Letting chemistry run unbalanced afterwards. The best finish in the world will not survive water that is not maintained.
Checklist

What to Check Before You Start

Condition of the existing waterproofing, and whether it is being tested
Substrate flatness against the tile format chosen
Which grout is specified, and whether it is epoxy
Whether the adhesive is rated for permanent immersion
Whether the waterline band is included
How the coping joint is detailed
Whether steps and benches are measured separately
Tile availability and lead time, particularly for imported mosaic
Who drains, disposes of and refills the water
What happens to the price if preparation uncovers repair work

Ask which grout is being used and whether the adhesive is rated for permanent immersion. Two pool tiling quotes at different prices usually differ on exactly those two lines.

FAQ

Pool Tiling FAQs

What are the best tiles for a swimming pool in Dubai?
+
Glass mosaic holds colour best under UV and gives the most depth in the water, at the highest cost. Ceramic and porcelain mosaic are more economical and hard wearing. Pebble finishes hide marks well and handle small movement. Plaster is the cheapest and the shortest lived here.
Why do pool tiles come off?
+
Usually one of three reasons: porous cement grout eroding until water reaches the bond coat, an adhesive not rated for permanent immersion, or a substrate that was not properly prepared. Movement in the shell is the fourth, and it needs addressing before refinishing.
Should I use epoxy grout in my pool?
+
In a pool, yes. Cementitious grout is porous, absorbs treated water and erodes over time, which eventually loosens the tile. Epoxy grout is non-porous, resists pool chemistry and holds colour. It costs more and takes longer to apply, which is why it is not in every quote.
Can I retile just the waterline?
+
Yes, and it is a common repair. The waterline band takes the most UV, staining and scaling, so it often needs attention before the rest of the pool does.
What is the difference between tiling and resurfacing?
+
Tiling means laying tile or mosaic over the shell. Resurfacing means applying a new render finish, such as pebble or plaster, directly to the prepared shell. Tiling generally lasts longer and costs more.
Do I need to replace the waterproofing when I retile?
+
Only if it has failed. That is established by a fill test before any finish goes on. Retiling over failed waterproofing means doing the work twice.
How long will a pool finish last in Dubai?
+
It depends on the finish chosen, the quality of the substrate preparation and grout, and how well the water chemistry is maintained. Unbalanced water shortens the life of any finish, and it is the factor most within the owner's control.
